Starr Whitehouse designed a highly compact, multi-functional space for this market-rate residential development a few blocks from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Featuring a common roof terrace as well as a courtyard that is split between at-grade and over-structure conditions, the design integrates social areas, private nooks, a boule court, barbecue stations, picnic tables, and rooftop agriculture. On the roof, pavers installed over shipping palettes create a unique “blue/green” system that both detains rainwater and supports plantings, allowing every square inch of the terrace to be used for water detention while still opening up the space to residents. Throughout these spaces, galvanized steel and raw cedar details pick up on the vocabulary of the building, designed by Kiss+Cathcart Architects. The project was awarded Gold Certification through LEED for Homes.
