Like Compass 1, the landscape at Compass 3 features an inner courtyard and through-bock terrace. Originally a mapped street, the through-block at Compass 3 must serve both the residents of this new affordable housing complex, and as a publicly-accessible thoroughfare. The aim of the landscape design is to keep the site as open as possible and as green as possible, framing wide orthogonal paths with hardy native plants drawn from the ecology of the Bronx River Valley. The steep grade of the site necessitates a stepped street at the end of the site leading down to West Farms Road. Clad in a stone reminiscent of nearby Riverside Drive, this broad stair will offer visitors sweeping views of the river valley which inspires the planting plan for the whole series of buildings nearby.
