The Pearson Street project is a fourteen story market rate rental building with a west-facing second floor outdoor terrace and side recreational yard. Responding to the industrial context in Long Island City and the abutting Long Island Railroad, the design integrates with the neighborhood and offers both respite and play to the building residents. Plantings and planting screens along the terrace edges complement the industrial atmosphere and privatize the terrace from adjacent buildings. Palletized wood decking, optimal for outdoor yoga classes, transitions residents from the fitness center to the terrace. Heading south, a series of planting beds create a journey through sitting areas to an overlook of Long Island City. The backyard below opens with a meandering pathway enclosed by a built up landscape, ideal for child play. A half-sized regulation basketball court serves as a safe, closed-in area for basketball and other outdoor games in summer.
