With more than 50,000 square feet of health and wellness space, the St. Barnabas Wellness Care and Affordable Housing project connects the community to St. Barnabas hospital, an anchor institution since 1866 in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. Its landscape design promotes healthy living through access to nature, opportunities for exercise, and places for meaningful social
interaction.

The building complex, designed by Dattner Architects, is a two-site mixed-use development. With 314 all-affordable apartment units, the landscape design addresses the open space needs of residents as well as visitors and employees of the healthcare facility. At the northern site, a second-floor roof terrace hosts a health plaza, providing spaces for fresh air, stretching, and exercise. At the southern site, an extended-hours daycare facililty caters to health care workers. The rear-yard of this building is a play yard for the day care children.
